ABSTRACT

Photoimmunology has its origins in the landmark studies around 25 years ago that demonstrated the immunogenicn ature of UV radiation-induced skin tumors taken from mice by the failure of their growth when fragments of these tumors were transplanted into naïvesyngeneicrecipientmice(Kripke 1974;DaynesandSpellman1977).§atthetumorrejectionwasimmunologicalwasshownbythereversaloftherejectionbyimmunosuppressivedrugs.Furthermore,iftherecipientmicewerepre-exposed toasubcarcinogenicdoseofUVradiation, transplantedtumorsagainsurvivedandgrew, indicating forthe©rsttimethatUVradiationcouldbeimmunosuppressive(FisherandKripke1978).Itwaslater observedthatthisinhibitedanti-tumorimmunitycouldbetransferredtorecipientmicewithsplenic TlymphocytesfromsuchUV-irradiateddonormice,andthus,thedependenceofthedevelopmentof skincanceronUV-induceddefectiveTcell-mediatedimmunity was revealed(FisherandKripke1982; Ullrich and Kripke 1984).
