ABSTRACT
Since there are a number of excellent treatments of fluorescence [1-6], the purpose of this chapter is to present a concise overview of the history and some of the fundamentals of fluorescence and then to treat several topics pertinent to an understanding of a few recent applications of fluorescence to problems of biological interest. One of the most important topics, fluorescence polarization or anisotropy, will, because of space limitations, not be covered.
