ABSTRACT
Handwritten character recognition is discussed from both a conventional and an artificial neural network (ANN) perspective. Reference is also made to printed character recognition. The importance of segmentation and other forms of preprocessing is emphasized. Several ANN systems are described, from which it is seen that special purpose, hierarchical networks are most suited to this task, with recognition accuracies of around 95% being commonplace.
