ABSTRACT

Since its creation in 1999, as a special health authority, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) aims to improve the quality and reduce the variation of the provided care to patients covered by the National Health Service (NHS) in England. In between its numerous other health- and social care-related initiatives, it has published guidance on a broad spectrum of clinical conditions of high impact and importance. The NICE guidelines are developed by independent multidisciplinary committees that include experts, as well as lay members and represent evidence-based recommendations.
