ABSTRACT

The standardization process can be performed at the national, regional, and international levels. The basis for worldwide standardization in all areas is provided mainly by the following organizations: the ISO, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Standards related to human factors and ergonomics are mainly developed by the ISO and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). In Europe aside from the CEN, there are two other standardization organizations—the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). At the national level, almost every nation has its own body for standards development. Examples of the national standardization organizations include the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), British Standards Institution (BSI), the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN), and the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR). The chapter provides an overview of the international and U.S.-based standards and guidelines in human factors and ergonomics (HFE).
