ABSTRACT

For the ergonomic design of products and production facilities, knowledge of anthropometric characteristics of human beings plays a fundamental role. To obtain scientifically valid data on human dimensions and possibilities of movement, special requirements must be placed on the necessary test equipment and test planning as well as the correct selection of test persons. The data obtained are statistically analyzed and are available in various international standards. In addition to manual measurement, three-dimensional measurement methods have recently become established that also allow the physical shape to be recorded. A large-scale measurement project on this basis is SizeGERMANY and, following the same pattern, SizeITALY and Size NorthAmerica. Such data are available for application in the form of published tables, but also in special data portals. Since for most applications, the knowledge of distance measurements alone is not sufficient, drawing templates of the human form have been developed with the increasing importance of CAD three-dimensional computer-human models. An overview of these human models is given.
