ABSTRACT

The most recurrent occupational factors found were physical load, mainly in Manual Materials Handling (MMH) tasks and awkward working postures often observed in occupations such as warehouse, blue-collar or construction work, or nursing (Zheng, Hu, & Shou, 1994; Smedley, Egger, & Cooper, 1995; Nahit et al., 2001; Plouvier, Renahy, & Chastang, 2008; Mitchell, O’Sullivan, & Burnett, 2008). Within MMH, lifting has been the task representing the greatest risk (Prado, Celis, & Avila, 2005; Xiao, Dempsey, & Lei, 2004; Mitchell, O’Sullivan, & Burnett, 2008).

Due to evidence that lifting is a risk factor for the presence of LBP, standards and guidelines for evaluating it has been developed, along with strategies to prevent or minimize this type of risk.
