ABSTRACT

Displays, controls, and their relations have been studied since the earliest days of Human Factors and Ergonomics as a distinct field. Consequently, much is known about factors that influence performance with different display-control configurations, and numerous guidelines that reflect this knowledge have been developed. In addition, there has been considerable research on stimulus-response compatibility and related effects from which recommendations can be made—such as response-effect compatibility—in recent years, but this has not yet been incorporated into specific standards and guidelines. The objective of this chapter is to provide a thorough description of existing standards and guidelines regarding the location and arrangement of displays and controls. In addition, we will discuss recommendations that can be made based on current knowledge. In all cases, we will discuss the findings that underlie the standards, guidelines, and recommendations.
