ABSTRACT

In this chapter, occupational health and safety is approached from the viewpoints of both Human Factors and Ergonomics and standardization, including management systems standards. This chapter focuses mainly on OHS legislation, regulations, and voluntary standards in the EU and the U.S.A., as well as management systems. Great emphasis is given to OHSAS 18001 as a specification for an OHS management system. It is seen as an effective tool for guiding the design of a continuously improved OHS management system in an organization. The lessons learned from quality management systems reinforce the interest in a management system in the OHS area of an organization. Emphasis is also given to the advantages of integrating management systems within an organization (quality, environmental, and OHS).
