ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a method for capturing semantic information from design protocols. We report on a preliminary study that analyses the transcript of a design meeting using the FBS ontology and derives processes within this ontological framework by employing linkography. The usefulness of the method is examined by applying it to the first engineering meeting, E1, as a case study. We show that the original 1990 FBS ontology captures 66% of all the meaningful derived processes, while the situated FBS ontology captures 92%. According to the ontology, the session is characterised by a high percentage of structure reformulation, followed by behaviour reformulation, and analysis.
