ABSTRACT

The necessity for monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of watershed development and soil conservation projects is well recognized today. However, M&E is not yet a definite science and its application often encounters difficulties and constraints. Consequently, between doing nothing for M&E and doing it perfectly some practical methods must be developed.

This chapter, based mostly on the author’s experience, discusses briefly the definitions, principles, designs, and methodologies of M&E work. Institution and training needs are also explained.

It is impossible to monitor every aspect of a project, and emphasis has been given to the selection of suitable indicators. Examples have been given and the ways and means of monitoring are introduced.

For evaluation, this chapter has highlighted some important principles and techniques for general reference. Stress has been put on the publishing of M&E reports so that lessons can be learned by others.
