ABSTRACT

The information presented in this book is based on the premise that hunting by the general public on private and public forestlands is the best way to reduce and maintain deer density and impact at acceptable levels. However, managers of privately owned forestlands may choose to restrict hunting access to paying customers who lease hunting (and other) privileges on the forest owner's land(s). Successful managers of forestlands leased for hunting follow the same practices outlined in this book for forestlands open to public hunting, with a few notable exceptions. This chapter describes management practices we developed and implemented for lease hunting in the eastern and southeastern United States for 200+ properties on lands ranging in size from 40 to 10,000 ha.
