ABSTRACT

Habitat use, and impact by deer on forest resources, are related to deer use of landscapes. Specifically, how deer occupy habitat, including size and dimensions of areas (referred to as home ranges) they use to meet life cycle requirements, are determining factors in the level of impact they have on forest resources. Managers must understand how deer react to changes in habitat, including availability of forage, hiding, and thermal cover, to be able to predict and manage for not just how deer use of habitat may be affected by management activities, but also for how factors such as time and arrangement of habitat components affect how, where, and when deer respond to habitat changes.
