ABSTRACT

Deer densities are affected by habitat quality and quantity, predation, and hunting pressure as controlled by hunting regulations. Depending on how habitat and deer harvest are managed, deer density can expand to levels resulting in habitat degradation and negative impacts on forest vegetation and wildlife communities, or it can be brought to and remain at levels that sustain healthy deer populations, habitat, and other wildlife species. Attempts to increase deer density while reducing deer impacts by increasing amounts of forage may succeed under limited conditions (Chapter 15).
