ABSTRACT
Antimicrobial prophylaxis is the prevention of a local or systemic infection by administration of an antimicrobial prior to and for a limited time after a surgical procedure. 1
Age, anatomical abnormalities, medical comorbidity, concurrent medications, and immune state influence risk for developing a surgical infection. 2
Patients with special considerations for antimicrobial prophylaxis include those at risk of endocarditis and those with certain types of indwelling orthopedic hardware. 3,4
