ABSTRACT

Only a portion of the words writers produce over the course of a game’s development end up in the game itself. There are many supporting documents created to help keep writers on track and communicate with larger teams. John Feil provides a survey of these documents with advice for how to write each one. They include: Pitch document, treatment, Game Design Document (GDD), supporting documents like character folios, plot guides and historical reference. He includes advice for keeping these documents up to date and sharing them with others. Helpful processes are outlined, such as daily standups and bug watching. Methods for tracking complex dialog trees are outlined, and the chapter finishes with exercises to get writers started on this behind-the-scenes documentation.
