ABSTRACT

Research on domestic violence (DV; i.e., violence that occurs between romantic and marital partners) has recently begun to incorporate geographic information systems (GIS) technology in order to better understand the nature of this form of violence. However, more work is still needed to explore how crime mapping can be adapted for the criminal justice response to DV, including how it can: (1) improve law enforcement response; (2) increase victim reporting; and (3) increase victim access to services. This chapter addresses some of these issues by mapping the locations of DV calls for service, offenses, arrests, and suspect residences in Memphis, Tennessee, to able to visualize and analyze DV hot spots, trends, and patterns, and discusses how criminal justice, including practitioners and service providers, can adapt accordingly.
