ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview based on previously published reviews of Critical Success Factors (CSFs) in project management literature. It describes a CSF as a critical project activity where a favorable outcome is a prerequisite for the project manager to conclude s/he has reached her or his project goal. Each large-scale complex projects (LSCP) has a unique set of individuals and circumstances that dictate which forms of communication will work best and will help team members to make timely and appropriate decisions. Gantt Charts, the Program Evaluation Review Technique, and the Critical Path Method (CPM) comprise the most commonly used project planning and control tools. The Stakeholder Circle Tool is recommended to manage and meet the concerns and expectations of key stakeholders in LSCPs. Open communication is the most cited CSF for LSCPs, followed by project planning and control, and clearly defined goals.
