ABSTRACT

In project management, visualization tools allow the mapping of large amounts of data to visual attributes that aid human information processing. Project management applications are concerned with visualization of data, information, and knowledge, all used to improve the decision-making of project leadership. Project complexity will not be “solved” by a new tool or visualization method, only by how project leadership learns to use tools and appropriate visualizations to gain insight into and solve problems within an evolving project. Understanding interactions drives the need for facilitation and conceptualization methods and tools. Moving from traditional project management approaches to complex project management requires a mindset that can deal with complexity and uncertainty. The foundation of the sensemaking loop is visualization. Visual modeling is used to frame the project within the enterprise system that is managing it. Projects have goals, boundaries, a structure of entities and interfaces, and interactions between those entities.
