ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses methods, tools, and the mindset that may help to get closer to the Holy Grail of systemic innovation. A major challenge of innovation is that the organization inherently enters new territory, which implies that it does not know the lay of the land. Innovation requires the recognition of an opportunity, creation of a fitting solution, successful deployment of this solution with a viable business, and an innovation culture. Project management for systemic innovation needs a prime focus on making progress by learning fast. Many incumbent companies are searching for the Holy Grail: a recipe for systemic innovation. Innovation adds specific challenges that make project management more complex, and unhinges all aspects that make innovation projects controllable. The specific systemic innovation challenge is the lack of a priori design knowledge in a context where there are also knowledge gaps. T-shaped presentations are presentations for a variety of stakeholders, combining breadth and depth.
