ABSTRACT

Temporary and permanent postthyroidectomy hypocalcemia are commonly encountered complications of thyroid surgery. Temporary hypocalcemia persisting beyond 6 months is doomed to be permanent and causes significant distress and morbidity for patients. Multiple factors are responsible for occurrence of hypocalcemia and many predictors have been identified till date. Various calcium and vitamin D formulations with specific advantages/disadvantages and recently developed rhPTH have made management of hypocalcemia easier. This chapter aims to discuss calcium homeostasis, causes and predictors of hypocalcemia along with management.
