ABSTRACT

Parathyroid imaging is a valuable tool in the surgical management of hyperparathyroidism, and a good diagnostic study allows focused parathyroidectomy over bilateral neck exploration for most single-gland diseases. Ultrasound and parathyroid scintigraphy with methoxyisobutylisonitrile (Technetium 99m sestamibi) are the dominant imaging techniques used, CT and MRI are generally used as an additional imaging for ectopic mediastinal adenomas or for failed surgeries. The chapter aims to provide a pictorial review of the common localization studies in parathyroid disorders in a simple well illustrative manner, easy to understand by surgeons, physicians and radiologists.
