ABSTRACT

Open conventional thyroid and parathyroid surgical procedures are performed through cervical incisions, leaving scars on the neck. Technological developments, however, resulted in smaller neck incisions and eventually the displacement of these incisions from the neck. Remote access surgery is defined as surgery on the neck in which the incision has been moved outside the neck. This text study will describe the types of remote access surgery applied to thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy and summarize the surgical techniques, outcomes, and complications of each surgical method.
