ABSTRACT

Algae is grouped into two types based on size: microalgae and macroalgae. Microalgae is the source of omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish are actually from microalgae that they feed on, and marine seaweeds are grouped under macroalgae. Fucoxanthin in brown algae helps to capture light for photosynthesis. Among the pigments, fucoxanthin is the only naturally occurring stereoisomer in brown algae. Absorption spectroscopy is one of the most widely used techniques employed for determining the concentrations of absorbing species in solutions. Emission is the ability of a substance to emit light after absorption; emitted light has a longer wavelength than absorbed light. Absorption is the opposite of emission, where energy, light, or radiation is absorbed by the electrons of a particular matter. Peng et al. reported that fucoxanthin is a carotenoid present in brown algae and diatoms.
