ABSTRACT
Self-healing coatings are a class of smart materials for the future surface protection needs. This chapter deals with the fundamentals, strategies, latest trends, and applications of self-healing coatings. The chapter begins with basics concepts of self-healing coatings and the strategies adopting for the development of self-healing coating. After that, a discussion on the use of self-healing coating as an effective tool to control corrosion of metal substrates has been included. The chapter is then highlighting the designing of multifunctional self-healing coating for specific applications which would be the part of future mobile phones, car paints, aircrafts, and skyscrapers. Last but not least, the chapter quotes the green practices in developing self-healing coatings. Finally, the chapter concludes with the enormous potential of self-healing coating to extend the safety and service life of engineering materials with a forecast on the possible research in self-healing coatings.
