ABSTRACT

High-performance polymer coatings (HPPCs) and their blends are designed for advanced engineering applications where low friction and wear are of great importance for the performance and lifetime of components. In this chapter, thermal and mechanical properties of polymer coatings based on HPPCs are discussed. These polymers are based on polyether ether ketone (PEEK), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and aromatic thermosetting copolyester (ATSP) and their blends, and they provide self-lubricity. In the absence of a lubricant, transfer films provide acceptable levels of coefficient of friction and wear rates. Micromechanical properties play an important role in the structural stability of HPPCs at different sliding velocities, normal loads, temperature ranges, and atmospheres.
