ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a basic overview of network function virtualization (NFV)-based Internet of Things (IoT) in fifth generation (5G) networks, with the focus on NFV-based IoT benefits, its key technologies, potential applications, and emerging challenges. The NFV-based IoT will serve as the access and local communication networks and be responsible for data gathering and transmission in 5G networks. The NFV-based IoT will be partially or fully virtualized into the software to work with 5G networks. Smart home is a typical example of the IoT integrating with 5G networks, which have been partially or fully virtualized through full-blown virtualization technologies. IoT data is becoming related to almost all aspects of human network activities from just recording events to research, design, production, and digital services over networks. 5G mobile crowdsensing applications will collect detailed information from sensors and their owners during task management procedures.
