ABSTRACT

Project owners are important stakeholders that make the decision of the delivery of green building projects but, because their motivations for making such decisions are unknown, it is difficult for them to overcome green building barriers and increase green building construction in practice. Therefore, this study obtains data from 150 Green Star Accredited Professionals on behalf of project owners in the Australian construction industry to establish their motivations for green building project delivery. After analysing the data using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, project owners’ motivation for the delivery of green building projects is divided into internal (INT) and external (EXT) factors of motivation. Also, the convergent and discriminant validity of both factors indicate that the external motivation can undermine the internal one in practice, which is consistent with the literature on psychology of motivation. Despite that project owners can be motivated by two different factors of motivation, the implication is that both can only be applied distinctively to prevent counter-productivity in green building project delivery.
