ABSTRACT

Social concepts that are theoretically constructed must not deviate from their true measures when they are operationalized and subsequently tested after data collection in Built Environment (BE) research to be valid. There are different categories of validity that BE researchers can test in research to ensure that correct concepts are measured. This chapter presents four categories of validity: face validity, content validity, criterion validity and construct validity. Furthermore, the practical application of different validity test techniques under each category is demonstrated using examples from academic publications. BE researchers can gain the understanding of appropriate validity test techniques to use in when measuring social concepts as well as practical steps to follow in this chapter.
