ABSTRACT

Psychodermatology describes an association between dermatology and psychology. The incidence of psychological issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts in skin diseases is high, estimated at about 30–60%. In this chapter, we will discuss the psychological issues and adaptive features of ethnic skin diseases. Results show that body image, self-esteem, and negative cognitions have been the major psychological aspects affecting the QOL of these patients. Asian obsession with fairness and fairness products is seen in women and increasing more in men as well in the past decade. In body dysmorphic disorder, botox and dermal fillers are used as quick fixes. We were able to conclude that patients with inflammatory, granulomatous, scarring, and pigmentary skin and hair diseases have been found to have significant psychological disturbances. These psychological issues are underdiagnosed and untreated, resulting in difficulty in adaptation to the adverse conditions in the patients.
