ABSTRACT

Acne is an inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit that typically affects more than 80% of people in their lifetime. Although it is easy to diagnose, it can sometimes be difficult to manage and pose a challenge to the treating physician. The scarring and post-inflammatory sequelae that follow acne can be quite distressful and have a significant negative impact on the quality of life. Based on etiopathogenesis, multiple systemic agents have been used for the effective treatment of acne. However, their use can be associated with adverse systemic events. Hence, newer novel topical therapies have been formulated for the treatment of this chronic skin condition, and numerous products continue to appear in the pipeline.
