ABSTRACT

The uses of polymers for the development of composite are growing. Nowadays, a lot of research is being conducted on how to save on and minimize fuel consumption, to make vehicles fuel efficient. This can be only achieved by making the structure light in weight with the same or better mechanical properties than the conventional structure. For making it lightweight, the polymer matrix (thermosets, thermoplastics, or biopolymers) can be reinforced with different types of synthetic fillers such as carbon fiber, Kevlar fiber, aramid fiber, and many more. Also, natural fibers are playing an important role in the development of natural fiber reinforced polymer composites but they are not as strong as synthetic fiber reinforced polymer composites. In the this chapter, the use of carbon fiber in polymer composites is discussed, along with the particular polymer types, such as thermoplastic and thermosets, and their mechanical and morphological properties. The various applications of these composites are also discussed.
