ABSTRACT

Cosmeceuticals are the hybrid products of cosmetic-pharmaceuticals, which are intended to maintain and improve the beauty through ingredients that also offer additional health-related benefits. Thus, cosmeceuticals combines elegance, skin fill, therapeutic or disease fighting or healing ability and delivery systems for the incorporated ingredients. Since ancient times, various herbs and spices have been used to not only to maintain and enhance beauty aspects of human, but also to treat various skin conditions because of their beneficial effects viz. antiaging, sunscreen, moisturizing, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. An important aspect regarding this is to how efficiently these herbal ingredients can be used or applied to provide aesthetic and medicinal values. In this context, various approaches/formulations are employed, including creams, micro- and nano-emulsion, liposomes, phytosomes, transferosomes and cubosomes. The current chapter presents various phytocompounds in cosmeceuticals along with different delivery systems for them. In addition, the formulation challenges and safety aspects are also discussed.
