ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the developed mammary sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) system that uses a magnetic probe and magnetic nanoparticles (ferucarbotran). Cancer is prone to metastasis which may complicate its treatment. Breast cancer is known to spread to the axillary lymph nodes, and in order to determine the stage of the disease and select the appropriate treatment, it must be confirmed whether there are metastases to the axillary lymph nodes. Medical technologies have undergone terrific advancements and promising drug developments include molecular targeted drugs that are based on gene data and gene editing technologies. SLNB, commonly used in clinical practice, is used in breast cancer diagnosis. Attempts have also been made to diagnose cancer metastases by introducing SLNB, even in operations for cancers prone to metastasis, such as pigment epithelial cancer (melanoma), head and neck cancer (tongue cancer, buccal mucosal cancer), gastric cancer, and lung cancer.
