ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the principles of a variety of electronic components and devices for flexible, wearable and stretchable electronics. Significant advances in materials, processing, design and simulation have enabled the integration of electronic functionalities into form factors, which are impossible to achieve with conventional electronics. The first part of this chapter discusses integrated circuits, starting with components including conductive traces, resistors, capacitors and thin film transistors. The second half of the chapter discusses optoelectronic devices including photovoltaics (primarily organic photovoltaics) and luminescent devices (electroluminescent and organic light emitting diodes). By the end of the chapter, the reader should have a broad understanding of the operating principles, materials, design and fabrication of common flexible, wearable and stretchable electronic components and devices.
