ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of speed control cameras in accidents before and after their placement, using location and the accident database for the city of Lisbon. Using the database and a geographic information system, accidents were assessed in the area of influence of the cameras. The analysis results show the influence of the existence of cameras on driver behavior over a period that allows seeing what happened before and what happened after. It can be concluded that the effect is most visible in the year of installation or the following year, and after the wane for reasons which relate essentially to the breakdown of the chambers and its not repair. It could also indicate some criteria for the most effective location of speed control cameras.
