ABSTRACT

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder originating from disrupted brain development. This disruption may be genetic in nature or environmentally induced. The presence of substantial copy number variants, de novο variants, and the inheritance of rare genomic coding might increase the risk of having schizophrenia. There are varied psychotic symptoms associated with this syndrome, such as hallucinations, paranoid delusions, withdrawal from the social fabric, and so on. Now, going by neurologic imaging techniques and postmortem analyses, dysfunctional neurotransmitter systems happen to be intricately involved behind the manifestation of these symptomatic signs. More work in this direction has helped scientists worldwide in formulating various pharmacologic treatments that help alleviate the issues associated with schizophrenia. Though psychosocial interventions are also being implemented in parallel, the use of medicines currently seems to be most prevalent. In this chapter, the authors will discuss the various aspects of schizophrenia engagingly.
