ABSTRACT

Love remains a scientific curiosity. The debate on its spiritual or scientifically driven context has continued over decades. It has been established that all types of love (from romantic to maternal) involve some distinct scientific basis. This starts from various parts of the brain initiating specific sets of hormonal secretions at the beginning of a relationship or leading up to a breakup. Even the most insignificant romanticized feelings, such as ‘butterflies in the stomach’, etc., have been explained by neuroendocrine reactions. It is an emotional response, experienced once or several times in a lifetime, and causes the arousal of desires toward another individual(s). This chapter describes the principles of romantic and parental love, which are majorly based on hormones and neurotransmitters. To be precise, this chapter discusses romantic love and parental love, along with their known scientific basis.
