ABSTRACT

Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existent ones, is a fundamental process in wound healing since it allows the reestablishment of the normal blood flow and the sufficient exchange of oxygen and nutrients, essential for cell proliferation and viability. In the last three decades, computational mathematical modelling have been under focus due to its possibility to mimic biological processes and to test new therapies using non-invasive procedures. With this paper, we provided a global view of the current approaches to model wound healing angiogenesis, pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of using different mathematical models in order to identify possible improvements. The development of wound healing angiogenesis models with higher dimension and that incorporate multi-scale analysis remains a challenge.
