ABSTRACT

The systems approach to problem solving has a strong basis in general systems theory and provides a sound framework for developing methods to solve pest problems (2,4,6,7). The terms pest control and pest management are often used as if they were synonymous but control is actually a subset of management. Management strategies may involve the use of many control tactics. The systems approach is useful in evaluating the compatibility of the tactics. However, before discussing the systems approach to pest management in soybeans, we would like to point out some differences between pest control and pest management.
