ABSTRACT

Before proceeding to a discussion of the weed control systems in southern United States, it seems appropriate to describe briefly the region in question as well as types of soybeans grown, something of the crop culture, and something of the weeds infesting the crop. The southern United States is an area of relatively high temperature and moisture during the soybean growing season. Although the region is in the temperate zone, rainfall tends to be abundant during this period and, as indicated, temperatures high, all of which is conducive to luxuriant plant growth. This includes, unfortunately, not only the crops in question but invading weeds as well. Therefore, competition between soybean and weeds tends to be high, necessitating a high level of control.
