ABSTRACT

"Rhizogenetics" is the genetic study of below ground plant organs, i.e., roots and nodules. There is an abject paucity of literature on this subject, especially in reference to soybean. Several laboratories around the world are currently attempting to rectify this situation, with a considerable amount of success. A paper by H. M. Taylor in these proceedings will discuss several aspects of rhizogenetics with emphasis on roots, especially tap roots. There have been several studies attempting to describe the structure and pattern of soybean root systems (13,9,16). Unfortunately, these studies have utilized very few differing varieties, and therefore cannot be used to generalize for the species.
