ABSTRACT

The soybean, Glycine max L. Mer., appears to have no geographical or environmental limitations which cannot be overcome with a few years of study by plant scientists. With more than 40 million ha planted to soybeans in 1978 and projected increases in the decade ahead, the soybean is truly a world crop supplying ever increasing amounts of nutritious protein food for man and animal. Indeed the latest news releases suggest that the soybean may soon prove itself in outer space. Nonetheless, in our research conference this week we should perhaps restrict ourselves to the planet we know best.
