ABSTRACT

A “Smart City” generally means a city that is equipped with basic infrastructure to provide quality lifestyle to its citizens. Nowadays, the concept of smart city is being adopted to attain the required level of sustainability and to improve the standard of living. Information in this context is extracted from various data sources of potential domains, such as healthcare, transportation, security, medical, etc. Smart City is based on Information and Communication Technology that ultimately cascades into a pool of heterogeneous, autonomous, and disseminated information, known as Big Data. Big Data management, in a constantly growing network of users and devices, has increased serious concerns regarding the efficiency of data collection, data processing, data analytics, and data security. Big Data Analytics is gradually being established as a new computing paradigm that can resolve these concerns and enhance the reliability of smart city services effectively and efficiently.

This chapter is structured around the fundamental concepts of big data analytics and Smart City following by their need and importance. It explores various smart city services and discusses different parameters and requirements for the development of a reliable smart city. This work proposes a reliability based framework for smart cities. Finally, certain open issues and challenges are presented for future research directions.
