ABSTRACT

A major interest in laboratory has been the study of the validity of methods of detection of drugs of abuse in biological fluids. Validity means the ability of a method to detect a drug or its metabolites in biological fluids following drug administration to humans. The subjects for all of our studies were healthy, adult, male federal prisoner volunteers from whom informed consent was obtained. All are former narcotic addicts who were incarcerated at the National Institute of Mental Health Addiction Research Center at the time of the study. All samples plus aliquots of the pre-drug control urines were randomized, coded, and analyzed under blind conditions by each of seven different methods: four separate extraction procedures followed by thin-layer chromatography using iodoplatinate spray for identification; the Technicon® Autoanalyzer; the free radical assay technique and the radioimmunoassay.
