ABSTRACT

In this chapter, cannabinoids will be discussed in depth. First introducing their origins through biosynthesis and chemical transformation. Cannabinoids are a class of terpenophenolic compounds that are considered the main bioactive component of the cannabis plant. Still, new cannabinoids are being identified at a stunning rate. As the number of known cannabinoids increases, so too does the degree of structural variation. Therefore, this chapter will present individual cannabinoids primarily organized by the molecular skeleton, and subdivided by their proposed chemical origin (e.g., decarboxylation, oxidation, isomerization). This chapter will present cannabinoids in a complete and structured way to the reader.
