ABSTRACT

Cannabis extracts are relatively new and immensely popular products. They have promoted the creation of new cannabis formulations and vaping devices, as well as related routes of administration such as dabbing. During their brief existence, they have been associated with a significant health crisis while also being promoted for harm reduction and pain management purposes. Despite public awareness, relatively little is known about the safety, formulations, vaping devices, and quality control associated with cannabis extracts. Herein, our current understanding of these issues is described. Specific topics covered include regulations and comparisons with tobacco vaping, naturally occurring cannabis compounds, and aerosol reaction products, as well as the effects of flavors, diluents, additives, and device characteristics.
