ABSTRACT

Technology moves at the speed of light, and regulation moves at a sluggish pace. Difficulties in regulating technology have always relied on a cumbersome process, fraught with red tape, to determine what is legal and what is allowed. Laws are typically enacted after a change occurs, in response to a precipitating event or situation. The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to much confusion within the legal community and related legal matters. The European Union, US Federal Trade Commission, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology have all weighed in on the practical legal issues surrounding the IoT. It is important to note the global nature— and necessity—of discussions between and among national organizations. Privacy matters are intertwined with cybersecurity and data breaches. There is no single law or standard that provides a uniform set of rules governing all the issues related to security, safety, and privacy.
