ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is similar to a chameleon. It changes its colors to blend in with the surrounding environment. But also like a chameleon, its inner concepts stay the same. IoT exists, and is growing, due to a collective root goal: The efficiency and optimization gained by “linking” the various islands of information that exist within a corporation, the home, or the world. The world economy is broken down into segments. These segments, called verticals, break down the whole into manageable pieces. A particular product, individual, or object is being transported every second of every day. Products move by truck, car, plane, and boat. People move by any of these methods. Products are made to conduct the moving. Smart cities are currently the general marketing term for this, so the chapter explores the definition of a smart city.
