ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a context for Internet of Things (IoT) devices and their use by an aging adult population. Gerontechnology is a term coined in 1988 to describe the study of technology and aging, and its scope is far and wide. IoT for elders falls into this area of research, and the opportunities to study the ways in which IoT can be used to support aging are limitless. There will always be a percentage of the population, in all age groups, who choose to live without the influence of IoT products or services in their lives. They might be Luddites, have religious reasons, live in remote areas without internet service, have disabilities which inhibit use, or other sound reasons. There are some fascinating products available in the IoT space to support aging in place. Many older adults are unfamiliar with these devices and creating awareness is a good first step toward future adoption.
